Can you use Press-Seal’s PSX: Direct Drive in a hole eight inches in diameter? Yes and no. Let us show you all the information you need to find your answer.
PSX: Direct Drive 8QRS
The PSX: Direct Drive technically starts at holes ranging in size from nine inches to 9.2 inches (228.6–233.68 mm). However, our PSX: Direct Drive 8QRS, which is manufactured to simplify smaller-diameter pipe installations to manholes, does work in holes eight inches (203.2 mm) wide. The 8QRS can even be adapted to 1.5-to-4-inch (38.1–101.6 mm) PVC pipes in either the plant or field, and its power sleeve adjusts to almost any 8-inch hole.

How to Install the PSX: Direct Drive 8QRS
As with the original PSX: Direct Drive, the 8QRS installs to the outside of the manhole with our patented power sleeve. Then, the pipe tightens to the connector with our stainless steel take-up clamps. View the simple steps below!
- Prepare the hole to receive the gasket by clearing away any debris or loose dirt. Examine the hole for any imperfections/bugholes and wire ends in the gasket bearing surface. Patch any voids with slurry and remove any wire protruding into the hole. Patch these imperfections with slurry, too, if necessary.
- Select the correct PSX: Direct Drive wrench. Wrenches and adjusters are sized in such a way that only the correct wrench can be used with each size of adjuster to provide the correct torque. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER SIZE OR TYPE OF WRENCH TO INSTALL ANY PSX: DIRECT DRIVE MODEL. View our wrench installation guide to learn more.

- Place the connector in the hole. Align the connector so that its adjuster rests at the top of the hole anywhere between the 9-to-3-o’clock position. Ensure the connector is square to the hole and in the final installed position of the manhole.
- Place the wrench on the adjuster nut so the arm of the wrench is on the installer’s left side. Doing so will ensure maintenance of proper orientation.
- Tighten the connector by pulling the wrench handle toward the outside of the manhole. The wrench will ratchet back easily at the end of each stroke. If the connector employs multiple adjusters, tighten each adjuster five times, alternating in sequence to ensure even distribution of installation pressure.
- Continue tightening until the proper torque is reached. The wrench will signal this by slightly “breaking.” If in doubt as to whether proper torque has been reached, tighten once or twice more. The wrench should “break” quickly and easily. If multiple adjusters are employed, make sure the wrench “breaks” at each one.
Complete the Job Right the First Time
And with that, you’ve officially installed our PSX: Direct Drive! To answer our original question of whether you can use the Direct Drive in an 8-inch hole, the answer will always require an explanation. So, let us clarify: for 8-inch holes, use the PSX: Direct Drive 8QRS, not the original PSX: Direct Drive itself. Have questions on which Direct Drive model your project requires?
