Septic tank gaskets comprising resilient, ASTM C923–certified rubber come in a variety of sizes, designs, and styles. Discover four of Press-Seal’s several offerings that meet this industry-standard specification—from simple push-in to mechanically installed gaskets.
What Is ASTM C923?
ASTM is an acronym for Advancing Standards Transforming Markets. This organization provides specifications for just about every component in industries like construction, manufacturing, and more. The group’s goal is to provide standards that “improve product quality, enhance health and safety, strengthen market access and trade, and build consumer confidence.”
Perhaps the most common ASTM certification in Press-Seal’s realm of manufacturing for underground infrastructure is ASTM C923 (Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Manhole Structures, Pipes, and Laterals). Several of our products meet or exceed this industry standard.
1. Kwik Seal
Of the four types of gaskets covered in this article, Kwik Seal is by far the simplest to install, as it requires minimal effort and tools. Read our Kwik Seal Installation article for the easy installation rundown, but here’s an even “kwiker” refresher:
- Ensure the cored or cast hole is clear of debris before applying spray adhesive 360 degrees around the hole.
- Fold the gasket into a heart shape and push it into the hole.
- Bevel the spigot of the pipe. Lubricate that pipe end and the gasket.
All that’s left to do is push the pipe home—it’s as easy as counting to three! It’s hard to believe that such a simple product can achieve such high standards, but the Kwik Seal compression connector does; it meets or exceeds all the requirements listed in ASTM C923, including physical properties of materials and performance testing. Find out just how popular our Kwik Seal really is!
2. PSX: Direct Drive
As the premier pipe-to-manhole gasket in the industry, Press-Seal’s flagship PSX: Direct Drive provides contractors and precast producers with a flawless installation process.
Direct Drive connects 8-inch (203.2 mm) PVC pipe all the way up to 36-inch (914.4 mm) concrete B-wall pipes with hole sizes ranging from 11 inches to 48 inches (279.4 mm to 1,219.2 mm). Plus, it’s the only gasket in the industry to utilize multiple integral mechanisms for larger pipe sizes, an intuitive feature that further ensures the security of the seal.

Both cored and cast holes accept the Direct Drive, and the installer utilizes a certified and pre-calibrated wrench to seal it away. Read our ultimate PSX: Direct Drive cheat sheet for all the details on the most popular boot in the industry!
In addition to C923, PSX: Direct Drive meets and/or exceeds the following ASTMs:
- ASTM C1244 (Standard Test Method for Concrete Sewer Manholes by the Negative Air Pressure (Vacuum) Test Prior to Backfill)
- ASTM C1478 (Standard Specification for Storm Drain Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Storm Sewer Structures, Pipes, and Laterals)
- ASTM F2510 (Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Manhole Structures and Corrugated Dual- and Triple-Wall Polyethylene and Polypropylene Pipes)
3. Cast-A-Seal 402/402F

Press-Seal Cast-A-Seal 402 cast-in connector.
All Press-Seal Cast-A-Seals provide watertight sealing strength in a simple-to-use form factor, and the CAS 402/402F is no different. This flexible pipe-to-manhole connector features an integrally cast keylock during production to provide a secure seal for stormwater and sanitary collection systems.
In addition to ASTM C923, CAS 402/402F meets or exceeds the following industry-leading standards:
- ASTM C1227 (Standard Specification for Precast Concrete Septic Tanks)
- ASTM C1244 (Standard Test Method for Concrete Sewer Manholes by the Negative Air Pressure (Vacuum) Test Prior to Backfill)
- ASTM C1478 (Standard Specification for Storm Drain Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Storm Sewer Structures, Pipes, and Laterals)
- ASTM C1644 (Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete On-Site Wastewater Tanks and Pipes)
- IAPMO/ANSI Z1000 (Prefabricated Septic Tanks)
- ANSI/CAN/IAPMO Z1001 (Prefabricated Gravity Grease Interceptors)
- NPCA Best Practices
- NOWRA Model Code Framework
4. Cast-A-Seal 964
The Cast-A-Seal 964 features the same flexible resilience and strength as its younger 402 sibling but for pipe ODs ranging in size from 4.21 inches (106.93 mm) to 6.9 inches (175.26 mm) for manholes and straight-wall applications. Plus, when cast in to a grease trap, the 964 eliminates the need for dual inventories.

This multifaceted product meets or exceeds ASTM C923 as well as:
- ASTM C1244 (Standard Test Method for Concrete Sewer Manholes by the Negative Air Pressure (Vacuum) Test Prior to Backfill)
- ASTM C1478 (Standard Specification for Storm Drain Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Storm Sewer Structures, Pipes, and Laterals)
- ASTM C1644 (Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete On-Site Wastewater Tanks and Pipes)
- ASTM F2510 (Standard Specification for Resilient Connectors Between Reinforced Concrete Manhole Structures and Corrugated Dual- and Triple-Wall Polyethylene and Polypropylene Pipes)
